Biographies: Sharing the Faces Behind the Scenes

Updated: Nov 26, 2018

Connecting audiences to a more personal element of restaurants: the founders, chefs, bartenders and visionaries.

Another, more complicated element of a press kit is client biographies or bios. These are written about the owners, founders, chefs, bartenders or any other relevant people at the client establishment. After now spending a few weeks on site at my internship I have had the privilege of meeting some of these individuals at their restaurants and even sampling some of their food. These people allow me to better understand their business, the vision and some of the ways in which their space is unique. Without their stories and perspectives I had a less complete understanding of their restaurants, bars and hotels. I learned that this personal connection to the people who stand behind each client business is essential to being a great publicist and fully understanding clients.

Because not all members of the media who will be covering Hattie B’s or other clients will have this privilege, it is important that a press kit contains bios for the key players at each client as they often will be included in coverage. The people who envisioned the restaurant, created the space and work there each day are critical to the food, atmosphere and success of the restaurant so it is important that their stories are told.

“I have had the privilege of meeting some of these individuals at their restaurants and even sampling some of their food.”

Some clients will proudly display their chefs and make them the star of the restaurant while others will focus on founders or bartenders, it really varies by client. For Hattie B’s there is a lot of emphasis on the family that founded the restaurant, the Bishop family and their long history in the industry. Therefore for this blog I chose to create a bio about founder, Nick Bishop Jr. In order to create a comprehensive bio, a PR firm usually has the bio subject complete a questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used to craft the bio and will include questions such as:

  • Name

  • Title

  • Hometown

  • Education

  • Topic of study

  • Inspiration

  • Professional journey

  • Past positions

  • Membership to organization, associations or benefit committees

  • Awards

  • Current location

  • Family

  • Fun facts and hobbies

Once the PR firm has the answers to these questions it becomes easier to craft a comprehensive bio about the person in question. See the bio of Nick Bishop Jr. here:
